How to Start Your Side Hustle

One year has passed by quickly

It’s been about a little over a year since I joined Teachers Pay Teachers and opened up my store.  I actually joined unofficially in 2012 but I didn’t know exactly what the site was all about until recently.  One of my colleagues that I was working with mentioned that I should post the Escape Room that I created for my class on TpT and sell it.  I never had the confidence or boldness to even think about selling my lesson.  Even though my colleagues always used the lessons I created, I didn’t think that it would benefit other teachers until I began posting my lessons last year beginning last July 2019.

It wasn’t until August 7th, 2019, I heard a cash register sound coming from my phone.  My first reaction was to run over to my phone to find out what it was.  It was my first sale for TpT.  I would like to share a tip for all the new sellers on TpT.

Tips for Getting Started

1.  If you are thinking of beginning your journey in TpT, stop thinking about it and go for it.  This is a journey that has lots of roads to opportunity.  When I started this journey, I never thought I was going to sell anything at all during my first year.  By the end of December 2019, I had sold $100 worth of products.  It doesn’t sound like a lot, but to me it does.  It’s $100 more than what I had before and it’s really not the money I’m earning that’s making me happy.  I know that I am helping a teacher teach an engaging lesson to their students with my creation.  I am also indirectly impacting the students that are using my lesson.

2. Premium membership – Pay your $59.95 membership for the year.  It is well worth it, especially if you are planning to be serious about your journey on TpT.  The premium membership pays you 80% of the product that you sell, instead of 60%.  It will quickly pay for itself within the year.

3. Put on the blinders.  You are this road on your own.  Do not look at other TpTers and compare yourself.  You are your own store and are very unique.  There will be plenty of teachers that will visit your store over the coming months.
